In My Mailbox Monday

In My Mailbox Monday

June 28th – July 4th

Happy Monday! We had another great week of new books showing up on my front porch! One book is one that I have been waiting for forever, and I’m so happy it’s finally here!

The first thing I got during the week was my Book of the Month box! I decided to go a thriller/mystery route this month, hence the three books I chose! My main book was 56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard. I was intrigued by the synopsis and thought “why not?”. I’ve been anticipating the release of Riley Sager’s new book, Survive the Night, and could not pass up on the $10 addition to my cart! The last book, Pretty Little Wife, sounded good, so I also added it. I’m excited to read each of these and can’t wait to see what they’re all about!

This stack is a conglomeration of books I read via Kindle and wanted paper copies, and ones I just wanted. I read the Wicked Trilogy last month and needed it on my shelves! I was hoping to get it when the JLA Shop opened last week, but there were issues and by the time I could get on, everything was literally sold out. The Blood is Love is the second book in a duology and it was released July 1st. I wanted the physical copy to go with the first book. While I waited impatiently for delivery, I ended up reading it on my Kindle. It did not disappoint! Bright Midnight was released earlier in the year and I bought the ebook, but then it got pushed down my list by all the other books I’ve bought. I’ll get to it eventually, but wanted the physical copy to add to my Karina Halle shelf!

THIS IS THE ONE I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!!! I read an ARC of this book before it was released last year and I LOVED it. It’s a fun YA fantasy that has great food imagery in it and made me fall in love with one of the deadly sins. The second book comes out later this year and is going to be New Adult and I am stoked for it! Anyway…This is the Fairyloot edition and when it first dropped, I wasn’t part of the Fairyloot club yet as I was on the waitlist. December 2020 I got an email saying January 21 I will be part of Fairyloot’s monthly boxes and I was ecstatic. FL said that early 2021, they would have this in their Fairy Trove restock and I waited and waited; thinking that FL and I had different ideas of what “early 2021” meant. Then, an announcement finally came and this was going to be the first day of the restock! I set an alarm and many reminders on my phone, waited for the email, and then finally bought it! Fast forward to July 1 and it finally came! I am blown away by how beautiful it is. The black edges, the stencils, the cover (not pictured is a foiled image on the hard cover under the sleeve). FL is doing a similar thing with the second book when it releases and you can bet I will buy it!

I’m very pleased with the goodies I got this week! I don’t know what I’ll get this coming week, as I don’t have anything planned, but who knows! The 13th I go to Vegas and then San Diego and plan on hitting up the Little Free Libraries in the areas…I may need a new suitcase just for books. Yikes!

Wrap-Ups

June 2021 Wrap-Up

June has been a busy, busy month, but I had a great reading month! School ended on the 22nd of June and because of hybrid learning, I had a lot of time to read at work the last few weeks of school. I’ve found that my routine has been work, home, read, nap, read, eat, read, bed. I try to fill all of my free time with reading or crafting…it’s going great so far! I also found out today that I can read while I’m on the bike or treadmill at the gym; or I can listen to an audiobook – another win!

Monthly Stats

Books, Ratings, and Brief Thoughts!

5 stars
This book is the last in the Titan series and I loved every second of it. I highly rec reading Covenant series (YA series that this is the spinoff of) and then reading this one!
5 stars
This was a highly anticipated release for me and it did not disappoint. I loved the modern day Hades Persephone retelling and the smut in this was *chef’s kiss*.
4 stars
This was a unintentional read. I needed a quick read to cleanse my pallette and I stumbled across this. This was an interesting read, but I somehow enjoyed it. Please check out trigger warnings before reading!
4 stars each
I kept seeing great things about this series on the JLA FB groups I’m in and decided to finally pick it up. Once again, JLA did not disappoint. This is an adult fantasy with Fae (as the enemies!!!) and a fantastic character named Tink! I fell in love with Ren as soon as we met him, but because of the Passionflix movie, all I can see is a young John Travolta…not that it’s a bad thing. I appreciated the story line of this series and sped through it in a few days. Highly recommend!
4 stars each
I was on a JLA streak this month, clearly. I had to dive into this series next because the same FB groups kept mentioning Roth and I was intrigued. I am proud to say I am 100% team Roth and NOT team Zayne. I’m always one for the bad boy with a heart, and in this case, he’s a DEMON! This was a fun, magic filled YA fantasy that I wish was adult…can Roth have his own adult series like Seth or… the sexual tension between Roth and Layla is amazing and I would literally die for Bambi the snake. I want my own familiar…sigh.
Books 1-3: 4 stars, books 4-5: 5 stars
I am beyond obsessed with this series. I am currently rereading book 4 and will probably end up continuing into book 5. I don’t think I can choose which of JLA’s series are my favorite, but Daemon Black is high on my list of book boyfriends (as is Seth, Cas, Roth, Ren…). Again, I wish this series had an adult spinoff, but my imagination is enough. I live for the sexual tension between Kat and Daemon. I want to punch Ash and Andrew in the face; I want to be BFFs with Archer and Dee, and I want some sexy aliens in my life (good or bad…I’m not picky). This series will have you feeling every single emotion possible and may make you lose your sanity in the best way.
5 stars
This is the first three books of the Lux series in Daemon’s POV and I LOVED IT. This isn’t in print because it was almost 1,000 pages, so you can only find his POV in Obsidian in stores. Seeing inside Daemon’s head gave me so much insight to why he was a douche canoe to Kat at the start and it really opened my eyes and made me love him even more (as if that was possible).
5 stars
This is an adult spin-off of the Lux series with a character named Hunter. When I say this book will make you swoon and sweat, I mean it in the best way. Hunter is an Arum, enemy to Daemon’s kind (Luxen) and seeing in his head as the “enemy” was fascinating. JLA really did an amazing job with this one. I so wish this wasn’t a standalone!
4 stars
HOLY MOLY! This book is H O T. Tessa Bailey does a phenomenal job with this story and I loved every steamy minute of it. I am in love with Bowen and need more of him. Again…bad boys with hearts do it for me… 😉
3 stars This was a fun YA Mystery to read. I didn’t love the main character’s attitude/personality, but I enjoyed the plot enough that I continued reading. I recommend this for YA readers that haven’t tried any mystery’s yet. It has a good plot twist at the end and is a great intro to the genre!

Well folks, that was an intense month of reading! I’m going on vacation in July so I doubt it will be as prosperous as June, but never say never!

What was your favorite read of the month?

Watcha Reading Wednesday

Watcha Reading Wednesday

This is just a week of new organization and blog posts for me! Today’s is “Watcha Reading Wednesday!”

I currently have three reads going on (not usually my style but here we are).

Book 1

The first is a reread of JLA’s fourth Lux book, Origin. I may or may not have just finished it last week, but I finished Oblivion yesterday, the first three books in Daemon’s perspective, and just had to keep going. I’m also majorly in love with Daemon, so I’m happy to keep reading!

In case you don’t know, the Lux series is a YA fantasy that deals with an alien species called the Luxen. Katy, the MC, moves to WV and meets a peppy and loving Dee and her hot, and not so friendly brother Daemon. The longer Katy is in WV, the more weird things she notices and the closer she becomes to Dee (and Daemon despite his many protests). Katy learns some life changing information and then shit hits the fan over and over again. But, Daemon is doing his best to protect his family and Katy, even though the rest of his family doesn’t want him to help Katy. These books made me cry, laugh, rage, and I may or may not have gotten jealous a few times…I like to dive right in as if I’m the MC…what can I say? Anyway, highly recommend this series!

Book 2

The second book I’m reading is an adult standalone and spinoff of the Lux series and it’s called Obsession (which perfectly describes how I feel about these books).

This book follows Hunter, whom we meet in Origin briefly and again in Oblivion. He’s an Arum (another alien) and works for the DOD. He doesn’t follow what the other Arum want and is extremely alluring and may be my new favorite. This book is VERY adult in the best ways possible and I am going to be sad when I finish it (probably today). The Lux series talks so much shit about the Arum, they are enemies after all, but it’s been interesting to see it from a different perspective. JLA’s writing is something that sucks me in and I can’t stop reading her books. I don’t know what’s going to happen when I finally read all of her current books and have to wait for more!

Book 3

My third current read is the Prison Healer by Lynette Noni.

I have the beautiful Fairyloot edition of this book, but I’ve been listening to the audiobook while I work on my Etsy shop. I can’t say that I’ve grasped every detail because I am multi-tasking, but I am enjoying the premise so far. I’m only about 100 pages in and I love the plot and characters. I enjoy the magic aspect that was slowly woven into the storyline. I also am obsessed with the cover and purple sprayed edges…just saying! Since I am only doing audiobook with this one, it is taking me longer, but I plan on listening to more of it today!

That’s all for now! I’m hoping to finish at least one of these tonight, to finish June with 18 books read! That may be my biggest month yet!

What books are you currently reading? I’d love to chat!

Crafty Tuesday

Crafty Tuesday

Putting the Crafty in the Crafty Reader”

I recently realized that for someone named “The Crafty Reader” I don’t often share anything craft related on here (I do on my IG sometimes). So, Tuesdays are now dedicated as Crafty Tuesday where I’ll share some of my bookish and non-bookish crafts!

Since I don’t mention it a lot here, I have an Esty shop where I sell decals and stickers (moving more toward stickers). I have a variety of themed items, including some book ones, that I love making and sharing with the world. If you live in the Baltimore/HarCo areas, you may have found some of my stickers in Little Free Libraries in the area! I’m working on designing some more book themed stickers, but for now I have about 13 (most are SJM related or generic).

Being my first post of this type, I’m going to turn it into a Double Crafty Feature, starring not one, but TWO of my sticker designs! Keep scrolling for a peek!

Double Crafty Feature

First up we have my newest JLA inspired sticker, based off of her From Blood & Ash Series!

This sticker is perfect for FBAA lovers and will stick nicely to laptops, water bottles, and (if you dare) books! You can find this sticker by clicking HERE

Our second sticker is inspired by the ever so popular Sarah J Mass’s A Court of Thorns and Roses. I’m very proud of this sticker but it took me FOREVER to make.

If this is one of your favorite series, as it is mine, this is the perfect sticker for you! I’m hoping to make more like this with other series, but I have to be able to focus for a long enough time to get it done…we shall see! You can find this sticker by clicking here!

I’m excited (and nervous) to share my creations with all of you! So long, farewell until next Tuesday!

In My Mailbox Monday

In My Mailbox Monday

June 21-June 27th

Hi all! I recently read the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout and was inspired by her character, Katy, to start doing an “In My Mailbox” post! My goal is to post these on Mondays, with all the books I’ve collected (via online shopping, in person shopping, or Little Free Libraries) the previous week (Monday through Sunday). This is my first post and I am stoked to share what I got this week!

I don’t like to buy books on Amazon because Amazon has enough money, but sometimes I’m impatient and need to take advantage of that two day shipping. Also, the books in these packages aren’t in stock in the Barnes and Nobles around me, nor have I seen them in any used book stores lately. So, these lovely packages contain the five main books in the Lux series (which I’ve mentioned above). I sped through these books like they were going out of style. These covers are much more attractive than the other ones for this series; I love the colors and the theming with O names. I have the 6th book (Oblivion) coming in the mail from Ebay…I couldn’t for the life of me find it in the cover that matches these though (ugh). Oblivion has Daemon’s POV for the first three books of the series (I’m halfway through now and am SO glad it exists) and the 4th and 5th books are split POV between him and Katy.

I’m obsessed with these!

This series follows Katy, a 17 year old, book lover as she navigates life with sexy aliens living right next door. The enemies to lovers is fabulous and the books are packed with sexual tension that’s to die for. I loved Daemon Black from the moment Katee’s eyes hit his abs and his take no shit attitude is fab. This series had me sobbing, laughing, jealous over fictional characters, and feeling every other emotion on the spectrum in each of the books (especially the beginning of book 5…good luck). I vote that JLA rewrites these in adult form or continues with Daemon and Katy college shenanigans…just saying. 😉

The other book I got this week was one I pre-ordered a while ago, and that’s Neon God’s by Katee Robert! This is a signed edition with the beautiful print of Hades and Persephone. I read this book the day it came out and haven’t stopped thinking about it since. The modern day Hades/Persephone story was phenomenal and, as usual, Katee Robert’s smut is *chef’s kiss*. I was 50 shades of blushed while reading this book. I may or may not have recommended it to all of my smut loving friends…it did not disappoint!

Well, that’s it for this past week! It was a mild week if I do say so myself! The JLA shop opens today, so I’m hoping to snag some of the Wicked Series and any other signed books I can get my grubby paws on! See you soon for another In My Mailbox Monday!

Rating My JLA Book Boyfriends

Hi, my name is Allison, I’m 27 and have a million book boyfriends…

To start, I haven’t read all of Jennifer L Armentrout’s series; I’ve read six. However, I have fallen in love with the male characters in all of them so far and need to just rate them. I don’t have a least favorite, but I’m going to rate them from my favorite to the one I would literally die for (which is most of them so…). It’s a messed up scale, but it’s the best I can do.

#6 Ren from the Wicked Series

I didn’t fall in love with Ren right away when I read the Wicked Series. I wasn’t sure how I felt about him, but then he pulled out the “Sweetness” pet name and I died a little. I liked the chemistry between Ivy and Ren and was really pulled into their banter and relationship. I also appreciated that this was an adult series and I got to see that side of them. I watched the movie version of the first book and am struggling to picture Ren as anyone but a young John Travolta (not a bad thing, but not how I envisioned him).

#5: Casteel from the From Blood & Ash Series

Casteel was my first JLA boyfriend. I love him so much, even after I got past everything that happened in book 1. I fell in love with JLA’s writing because of this series, and Cas would be number one on my list, but I met all the other lovely men JLA has created. Cas is cunning, sexy, and just all around scrumptious. I love his fierce love for me…I mean Poppy, and how he would do anything for her. I can picture Cas the most clearly in my head (thanks to some bussin’ fan art) and I highly recommend this adult series. Kieran is also a runner up solely because he has the best and most sarcastic personality. I really need Cas and Kieran in my life…I’d love to be a trio with them.

#4 Roth from the Dark Elements Series

I love me a good demon lover. Roth is such a badass and really makes my heart swoon for a demon. I would happily sell my soul and maybe a family member or two to be Roth’s lady. However, as for pet names, Roth calls Layla “shortie” and I really HATE that. It’s not endearing and bumped him down a few pegs because of it. I found myself throwing myself back into high school because of Roth and, looking back on my own HS experience, I wish I had a Roth to entertain me.

#3 Daemon Black from the Lux Series

I’m currently on book 5 of this series and have loved Daemon from the first time we met him in all his shirtless glory. I don’t usually go for aliens, but I’m ready for an extra terrestrial take-over right about now. I also don’t usually love the pet name “Kitten”, but I get some vicious butterflies whenever he calls Kat that. Daemon does have some controlling characteristics that I’m not fond of, but since he is a book character, I can look past that. I SOOOOO wish JLA would do an adult spinoff of this series with Daemon and Katy grown up some…I would literally buy every copy. Daemon would be such a great character in an adult book. Buy, I am quite content using my imagination!

#2 and #1: Seth from the Covenant/The Titan Series

Seth the Apollyon God of deliciousness has my heart. We met him in the Covenant series and as soon as Alex formed an opinion on him, I was hooked. He was the typical bad boy that my soul lurches toward in books/movies/tv shows. I would literally die for Seth. He has this rough exterior, but his heart is so big. He made some big mistakes through these two series, but he made up for them (in my opinion). I also was SO thankful that JLA wrote a spinoff series about Seth that was ADULT! Talk about fueling the fire in my “soul”.

Now all I want is for my other book boyfriends that were part of YA stories to have their own adult spinoffs. One can dream right?

Are you shocked that Zayne and Aiden aren’t on this list? They aren’t my cup of tea. Aiden made me so angry because he was such a rule follower, and I go for the bad boys (as you can see from this list). Roth just over powered Zayne and I was 100% in love with Roth, so I never gave Aiden a chance. I have heard that Zayne goes from BFF to Daddy in his follow-up series, so I may add him to the list then…who knows!

How do you rate JLA book boyfriends? I’d love to know! Are there any that I haven’t met yet that you think I should read about ASAP?

Book Reviews

The Covenant Series Book Review

Overall, this series gets 4/5 stars!

For this review, I’m not going to summarize the books since there are five of them, but you can find the summaries for each book on Goodreads!

Before reading these, I had only read the FBAA series and one other JLA book. I started Half-Blood over the summer and couldn’t get into it because it was too similar to the Vampire Academy. But, I decided to pick it back up this month (mainly because I wanted to read Seth’s series) and I felt the same…however I powered through and by the last 25% I was hooked. Being who I am, I immediately fell in love with mysterious, bad boy Seth.

I loved Alex throughout this entire series. By book two I was totally team Alex and also Team Alex and Seth. In the FB groups I’m in, everyone loves Alex and Aiden and I just can’t see it. Aiden is a smidge annoying and too goody goody for me. I like what I like, and in this case, it’s Seth.

Anyway…I really enjoyed the Greek mythology path that this series took. I liked the involvement of the gods and Underworld, Olympus, etc. I don’t typically like those types of books, but I couldn’t put them down (once I got past book one). I thought the pacing of these books went well and some of them left me hanging at the end, which I love (and also hate haha). I was able to picture everything in my head because JLA (as usual) does a great job building her worlds and characters. I put myself in the story as Alex’s character (and made a few edits when Aiden was around) and felt every emotion that Alex was feeling. Being able to immerse myself into the plot and story is always a big must for me when reading a story. If I can’t see myself as a character, or see the characters/places, I lose interest quickly.

JLA broke my heart, again, as usual, with some of her chapters and I am not okay. Since I do feel what the character feels, I may or may not have cried a lot…it wasn’t pretty.

One of the issues I had with this book is that there were some pieces that were repetitive. The characters mention putting a bell on another one, A LOT and it started driving me bonkers. There’s also the phrase that’s so often used in YA stories “I let go of the breath I didn’t know I was holding” and I was annoyed each time I saw that. There were also a few others that irked me, but nothing too series that swayed my enjoyment.

Now, if you’ve read any of my other review, you know that I love my spicy books. I knew this was YA going into it so I don’t hold the lack of steam accountable. However, there were so many scenes where I was sitting there thinking “omg I can see this scene turning adult” and then proceeded to daydream about the scene in an X rated fashion.

ANYWAY…I did love this series and highly recommend it! I just started reading the first book in the Titan series (adult spinoff with Seth as the main character) and I am SOOOOOO excited to keep reading this. I love Seth…can you tell?

This has been more of my thoughts instead of a review, but it is what it is. Thanks for hanging in there with me!

Have you read this series? What are your thoughts?

Wrap-Ups

2020 Reading Wrap-Up

A book is a dream that you hold in your hands”.

Overview!

This year has been quite the reading year for me! I have ended 2020 with 108 books added to my “read” list! Technically it’s 97 different books with 11 being rereads (some are multiple). Never did I imagine that I would read 20 books this year…let alone over 100! Quarantine has been good for something!

I also started a book inventory the other day so I can keep track of all the books I own. I finished the two shelves in my craft room/ library room and am just over 300 books…I still have about 100 more scattered throughout the house to log (plus ones I have pre-ordered/yet to come in the mail). Before quarantine, I didn’t own enough books to fill a full row on my bookshelf….needless to say, I’ve spent A LOT of money on books and I don’t regret any of it!

Subscription Boxes

A lot of my money has also gone to book themed subscription boxes. I do the YA version of each and am obsessed. However…I think I may need to cancel some of the subscriptions (I already cancelled two). Below are the ones I’ve tried/still do.

  • Owlcrate: I love OC so much. They usually have great books/dust jackets and the authors write notes and sign the books. I haven’t loved all the merch that OC chooses, but most of the time they’re okay. I would like to see more small business support in their bookish goodies.
  • Bookish Box: This was the first one I subscribed to. It’s very similar to Owlcrate. I enjoy it a lot, but when compared with some of the other boxes, I don’t know if it’s worth the money.
  • Once Upon a Book Club Box: I only got two of these books. They’re formatted so that the goodies you get are hidden and tell you to open them when you get to certain pages. I am not patient enough for that…I also didn’t enjoy a majority of the items in these boxes and ended up cancelling.
  • Fae Crate: I only got one Fae Crate before cancelling. It wasn’t really my style. I’m glad I tried it out though.
  • Illumicrate: I’ve gotten two so far (I just got off the waitlist!). I LOVE Illumicrate! They have great items and great books. I’m a sucker for sprayed edges and they do them often! Highly recommend.
  • Fairyloot: I haven’t gotten one yet because I just got off the waitlist. My first box will be coming in January and I am SO excited. I have heard AMAZING things about FL and can’t wait to see what the first box I get is like. Their books are GORGEOUS and I know they do a lot of sprayed edges as well!

Overall, I think Fairyloot and Illumicrate may kick Owlcrate, Bookishbox, or both out of the running. I really shouldn’t be spending all that money for four subscription boxes a month anyway…oops…don’t tell my husband!

Favorite Books of the Year!

I have had quite a lot of five star reads. I’m going to list all of them and then figure it out from there!

  • Getting Down by Helena Hunting
  • Handle with Care by Helena Hunting
  • Shacking Up by Helena Hunting
  • Lingus by Mariana Zapata
  • House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas
  • Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas
  • Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas
  • A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
  • Smut by Karina Halle
  • A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas
  • Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco
  • A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas
  • With This Heart by R.S. Grey
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
  • Regretting You by Colleen Hoover
  • The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta
  • Beach Read by Emily Henry
  • Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
  • A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout
  • Gifting Me to His Best Friend by Katee Robert
  • The Mindfuck Series by S.T. Abby
  • Book 2-10 of the Experiment in Terror Series by Karina Halle

I obviously love each of these books for many different reasons! My top three are actually entire series and I hold each of them dear to my heart.

In third place for the year (and maybe ever) I have the From Blood and Ash Series. AKOFAF threw me into a rough reading slump after I finished it. I was so drawn into this world that JLA created and was in love with the characters, that when I finished I couldn’t pick up another book without wanting to read about Poppy and Cas. I am so excited for the new book coming in 2021!

In second place is the Experiment in Terror Series. I have never read nine books so fast in my life. I read a book a day and couldn’t stop until I devoured all of Karina Halle’s words. I became obsessed with this series in November and was SO stoked to hear that a new book was coming out December 11…well it came out a day early and you bet your booty that I bought it and read it that day! I was struggling in November with picking up books and this series sucked me out of that slump and threw me head first into an amazing paranormal realm with beautiful and enticing characters. I am so happy I came across this series!

In first place we have the ACOTAR series. My dear friend Sophie recommended me these books in January and I ended up finding them on clearance in Target. I tried the first chapter of ACOTAR and wasn’t feeling it. Fast forward a few month and add a bored, quarantined Allison, and I picked up the book again. This time I was intrigued. I got passed chapter one and was really vibing with the feeling of the book. I then became enamoured by Tamlin (ugh, ew) and couldn’t put the book down. Once I finished the first one I just had to dive into book two (which is my favorite of the series…I read it 5 times so far). I finished the series and all I wanted to do was read more SJM books….no, all I wanted to do was read. This series made me fall in love with reading again and I am so thankful that Sophie recommended them to me almost a year ago! I have my SJM shrine on my bookshelf and currently own 54 SJM books (a lot of duplicates and special editions….don’t judge).

2021 Reading Goals

For 2021 I plan to go with the flow and read whatever my heart desires. I don’t want to stress over my ever growing TBR list. I do have a handful of books that I will read when they’re released, but other than that, I want to freely roam my shelves and enjoy each page I read. I also want to become more comfortable with DNFing books. I struggle with this because I feel like if I paid for a book, I should read it. But…why read something I’m not enjoying? I plan to keep up with blogging and booktube more but we’ll see about that. Overall, I want reading to be fun and not a job (which some people I follow make it seem like one…). I read for me and no one else and that’s that!

So, thanks Sophie and SJM for helping me find something I’m passionate about this year! I’ve really gotten to visit some amazing realms and worlds through books and can’t wait to see where 2021 takes me!
