The “Nope” Book Tag!

I have been SLACKING with reviews and reading in general because life got busy. I’m currently sitting in my classroom, looking at my to-do list, and I need something fun in my life. So, I googled “Book Tags” and found a HUGE list of them! I clicked a random link and it led me to Caffeinated Bookwork Life‘s blog. I read over their responses and I had to give it a try for myself! If you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged!

NOPE! Ending: a book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy.

The ending of this book made me FURIOUS. I read it back in July of 2020 and almost a year later I can still remember how the ending of this book made me feel. I loved this book SO DAMN MUCH and then Hazel James destroyed me. U G H.

NOPE! Protagonist: a main character you dislike and drives you crazy.

Thinking back on books I’ve read, I’d have to say that Bella Swan was a protagonist I didn’t love. Her actions and personality drive my batty and I think part of that has to do with the live action portrayal of her character. I remember loving Twilight so much when it came out, but looking back at it all I can think is ‘WHY’!!!!

NOPE! Pairing: a “ship” you don’t support.

I was going to go basic and go with Tamlin and Feyre BUT, then I remembered this book I read a few months ago and had to go with Lou and Reid. I LOVED Lou. She was a badass and knew what she had to do to survive. The fact she was paired with Reid as love interest was so annoying. He is so bland and boring and she really deserves better. I struggled with this book and I think part of it had to do with this pairing!

NOPE! Genre: a genre you will never read.

I’m not a huge non-fiction reader but I’d have to say any non-fiction dealing with history. I struggle reading historical pieces because I always struggled in history class. I know that’s a dumb excuse, but it really did impact my reading. I’m trying to branch out with historical fiction in terms of fantasy books, but we’ll see how that goes!

NOPE! Book format: book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition.

I recently discovered that I don’t 100% hate audio-books, but they are my least favorite format to read with. I like them because I can multitask while listening, but the voices and speed at which the person reads just bother me sometimes. I also feel like I zone out when listening to them and then I miss information. I much prefer my kindle or physical copies. Although, if it’s a book I’ve read many times before, I will listen to the audiobook for the background noise. I did this with the ACOTAR series before ACOSF came out.

NOPE! Trope: a trope that makes you go NOPE.

I absolutely CANNOT stand Amnesia tropes, especially when it happens later in a book or series. If it resolves quickly, sure, I can deal with it, but if it takes chapters and chapters to get better I lose my mind. When a character that I’ve spent chapters (or books) learning about loses all their memories and has to find them again, it feels like a waste of my time. Like, I know all of the information already, and now have to sit through their journey of figuring out themselves all over again. I can’t stand it!

NOPE! Recommendation: a book recommendation that is constantly pushed at you, that you simply refuse to read.

I know a lot of schools that have this as required reading, but whatever high school courses I took didn’t make me read this. I know so many people that love the book, love the movie, and just love this in its entirety. It’s one of those books that I never want to pick up, solely because it was a school book. My husband had to read it and failed his essay about it (because he didn’t actually read it…). I remember reading things like “Animal Farm” and “Lord of the Flies” and those are books I’ve been traumatized by because I was forced to read them. I love to read, but I HATE being forced to read something, especially when it’s a genre I don’t like. No wonder kids these days don’t enjoy reading. They have books like these shoved down their throats and then associate reading with school. I’m lucky to have broken free (mostly) from that mindset, but I will not pick up this book!

NOPE! Cliche: a cliche or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.

A pet peeve of mine when reading spicy scenes is some of the words authors use to describe a characters privates. I am proud to say I love smut, but when authors use words like folds, mound, nub to describe a woman’s sex, I lose my mind. ESPECIALLY, when these words are constantly used in adult books. That being said, I don’t like the overuse of the words “cock” and “pussy” either. Some books seem to ONLY use those words and absolutely nothing else. The art of smut writing is intricate and I applaud those that can do it (I sure can’t). But let’s spice up the spice a bit.

NOPE! Love interest: the love interest that’s not worthy of being one.

UGH. Hardin from After and Travis from Beautiful Disaster did NOT deserve the love they got. However, some may say that the girls were dumb enough to continue with these trash boys, but I still don’t think that’s right. Hardin and Travis may be the most manipulative and harmful love interests I’ve ever read. They make Tamlin from ACOTAR look like a saint. The thing things they said and did the their loves were horrendous and I honestly don’t know why it’s romanticized. That being said…I am guilty of not 100% hating these books. I hated how the male characters acted, but I couldn’t put either of them down. Do I think movie version of Hardin Scott is sexy af? Yes. I also think the movie version toned him down A LOT from his character in the book, so people that only know the movie version of Hardin won’t ever see how truly awful he is. Sigh. (Also, how you gonna do Harry Styles like that, Anna?)

NOPE! Book: a book that shouldn’t have existed.

Now that my smut palette has expanded quite a lot since 2011, I can say that the 50 Shades series shouldn’t exist. Talk about writing cliche’s and poorly written sex scenes. Good riddance.

NOPE! Death: a character death that still haunts you.

Page 666 in ACOWAR. I know the character doesn’t stay dead, but that scene literally also killed me. I remember reading it for the first time and I just sat and sobbed…all for it to be reversed moments later. I feel like the scene itself could have been done without OR SJM could have actually kept a character dead. I feel like so many authors kill a character for a hot minute and then it’s like ‘just kidding!’. I think the shock factor would be so much stronger if the characters stayed dead. That would probably cause an uprising in some cases, but it could work!

NOPE! Author: an author you had a bad experience reading for and have decided to quit.

Last but not least, this question goes to J.K. R*wling. I am so annoyed and disappointed with what a shitty person she actually is. Harry Potter was such a huge part of my life, and I try hard to separate the author from the books, which I can do, but I struggle when it comes to not supporting her in other ways. Whether it’s funko, visiting the new HP NYC store, or other merch that I know she’ll benefit from, it’s hard. I still love the world of Harry Potter, but I can’t justify supporting such an ugly-on-the-inside human being.

Thank you to those of us that made it this far! I’d love to see your responses to these questions!

R.I.P It or Ship It Book Tag

I found this book tag on Dreamland Book Blog and just had to try it!

The Rules

  1. Write down a list of book characters. I wrote down 14.
  2. Put into a container of your choice: I chose a cup…it’s what I had closest to me!
  3. Pick two names at a time.
  4. Decide if you ship the relationship or if you want the relationship to cease existence! Easy enough!

Round One: Ship it!

Couple number 1 is: Castiel from From Blood and Ash and Morana from The Darkverse Series. Honestly…I think I ship this one! Both are badass and would challenge each other in the best ways possible. Morana kind of reminds me of a mob version of Poppy anyway, so I think it would work (at least for a bit anyway!)

Round Two: RIP it!

Couple number two is: Poppy from From Blood and Ash and Aren from The Bridge Kingdom. I can’t see Poppy with anyone but Castiel…I loved Aren, but I don’t know if it would work with them. Aren’s land is kind of secluded and Poppy has been secluded her whole life. I don’t see it being a thing…thank you, NEXT.

Round Three: Ship It!

Couple number three is: Bryce from Crescent City and Dex Foray from the Experiment in Terror Series. What personalities these two have! They would give each other a run for their money and the spice in the sheets would be *chef’s kiss*. Both like to have fun and do risky things, so they’re perfect!

Round Four: RIP It!

Couple number four is: Katniss from the Hunger Games and Perry from the Experiment in Terror Series. I don’t know how I feel about Katniss and Perry being together. I love Perry to death, and Katniss is great, but I don’t think they’d make a rockin’ couple. I don’t even know if they would be friends. I think Katniss would annoy Perry and it would get old real fast. Perry is also a lot like me and I don’t think I would enjoy being in a relationship with Katniss so…I’m gonna have to go with NO on this one.

Round Five: RIP It!

Couple number five is: River from Fables and Other Lies and Wrath from Kingdom of the Wicked. River has his own charm, but Wrath is the embodiment of sin (literally…look at his name). There would be a huge power struggle in this relationship, but I think Wrath would end up killing River in the end..so it probably wouldn’t work out. I wouldn’t mind watching them try though…I’ll make the popcorn!

Round Six: I Ship It…but it’s complicated

Couple number six is: Aelin from the Throne of Glass Series and Ryder from the Fae Chronicles. Holy crap. I would LOVE to see this happen. However, Ryder is super dominant and would try to get Aelin to submit and she would take absolutely none of his shit! She’d probably try to get him to submit, which isn’t in his vocabulary, so it would probably a hot mess (emphasis on hot). I think it would be a constant back and forth for power and Aelin would somehow end up on top, as she always does. Ryder would turn into a beast and it would get messy…but it would probably be worth it. Maybe…

Round Seven: Ship It…;)

Couple Number Seven is: Ristan the Demon from the Fae Chronicles and Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses. OH.MY.GOD. What a pairing! These two have such snarky personalities…I would LOVE to see them attempt a relationship. I can’t imagine how funny it would be to be friends with the both of them together. I need it to happen. High Lord of the Night Court and his Demon…we love to see it. Yes, please. The trouble they would get into together…I see lots of sexy adventures that they include all their friends in for…YAS.

That was more fun than I anticipated. I would love to do this with different characters too! I’m glad I stumbled across this tag!

The Anonymous Bookaholics Tag

Hello! I’ve been a bit MIA lately, and haven’t been reading much because work has started back full swing! That being said, I do have some time to do a fun book tag (we all know I love a good tag)! Thank you to Books are 42 for tagging me – let’s get to it!

  1. What do you like about buying new books?

Everything! I love coming home and finding a spot for them on my shelf. I love admiring the covers and the art word. The thrill of having new books to read is fantastic (yes, the thrill). It’s even more exciting when I buy them from used book stores or thrift shops/flea markets!

2. How often do you buy new books?

Too often…I probably buy a new book (or more) once a week. I went months without giving books a thought, but now they’re all I want to buy; well books and book related merch. I’ve tried to put myself on a book buying ban, but that ended in 30 new books…so I won’t be doing that again!

3. Bookstore or online book shopping: which do you prefer?

I like going to bookstores and physically holding the books, browsing the aisles, and whatnot. Then, when I’m done, if there’s something I didn’t find, I’ll do online shopping. I can typically find books cheaper online that in person, even at used book stores. I just feel like online book shopping isn’t the same, but I do get very excited when the books come in the mail!

4.  Do you have a favourite bookshop?

We have one really good used book store near us, and it’s called Ukazoo! I’ve been going to them for years. They have great prices, a big selection, and I can easily spend hours in there searching for books. I would love to go around and find more used book stores! I have a road trip to PA planned, there’s about five stores within minutes of each other…I just need the time to get to them!

5. Do you pre-order books?

I’ve always loved reading, but quarantine has really made me have a new appreciation (and obsession) with reading. This is the first time I’ve ever pre-ordered books. I have a VE Schwabb book pre-ordered and I pre-ordered ACOSF. I’m also into special edition things now and have a handful of them pre-ordered too…oops!

6. Do you have a monthly buying limit?

I should, but I don’t. I’d never stick to it, so what’s the point?

7. How big is your wishlist?

Fairly large. I have a lot of books that I want to read and a lot that I want to buy. I think I’d be poor if I bought them all.

8. Which three books from your wishlist do you wish to own right now?

Good Girl, Bad Blood; Madhouse, and the Dusty books (I’ve read them but need the physical copies).

If you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged! I’d love to see everyone’s answers!

Quarantine Book Tag

I, like a lot of people, have been going absolutely stir crazy during this quarantine! To take up time and actually enjoy myself, I’ve been spending my time reading (and buying absurd amounts of books). I figure that I should put some of my book knowledge to use by creating a fun and quirky quarantine book tag. I’ve never made a tag before, but as long as it’s fun, who cares if it’s awful? All answers should include something from a book (character/location/etc).

So, if you stumble across this, consider yourself tagged! You can do a blog post or a video for booktube/IG/booktok etc! Have fun and enjoy!

Questions

  • Corona Virus has spiked in your local area. You’ve been ordered to stay home, except for emergencies. Lucky for you, you live with two other people, so you’ll at least have some socialization. What 2 book characters do you live with?
  • Where exactly are you quarantining?
  • While quarantining, your neighbor is ignoring all the rules. They’re constantly having guests over and leaving their house to fetch non-essential things. Which book character is your annoying, rule-breaking next-door neighbor?
  • While bored one day, you find yourself scrolling the internet looking for a pet to adopt post-quarantine. What fictional pet/creature would you adopt as your own?
  • What book quote is getting you through this quarantine?
  • As the days move on, you grow more and more restless. You pick up your favorite book, one you could read over and over again without tiring of it, and dive right in. What book are you reading?

My Answers!

Corona Virus has spiked in your local area. You’ve been ordered to stay home, except for emergencies. Lucky for you, you live with two other people, so you’ll at least have some socialization. What 2 book characters do you live with?

Hmmm, I would probably live with Bryce from SJM’s Crescent City and Rose from the Vampire Academy series! I think they’re both badass and would make great roommates. They’re both independent and would understand when I need my alone time, but they’re loyal to their friends and would know how to have a good time, even stuck at home!

Where exactly are you quarantining?

I want to go with my obvious answer, which would be Velaris, but let me not be predictable. I think being Quarantined in Maui (like in the Unhoneymooners) would be pretty awesome. If we lived on like a private beach, we could still enjoy nature and be safely away from other people! What a dream that would be!

While quarantining, your neighbor is ignoring all the rules. They’re constantly having guests over and leaving their house to fetch non-essential things. Which book character is your annoying, rule-breaking next-door neighbor?

Bill Compton from the Sookie Stackhouse series. I can’t stand Bill (sorry Bill lovers), but I feel like he would just do whatever he wanted because he’s a vampire and, if he goes at night, who would see him? I’d see you Bill…ugh. You might already be dead, but the rest of us don’t want the virus because you can’t keep your fangs in your head.

While bored one day, you find yourself scrolling the internet looking for a pet to adopt post-quarantine. What fictional pet/creature would you adopt as your own?

UGH! There are so many pets that I would want…some small and some large. I think I’d want to adopt either Abraxos from the Throne of Glass series or the cat, Clive, from the Wallbanger series. Both are fantastic and they would be fierce pets to have! Can I have them both?

What book quote is getting you through this quarantine?

Cliche but super helpful during quarantine: “Don’t let the hard days win” from SJM’s ACOTAR series (I believe Mor says this to Feyre). Quarantine has good and bad days, so remembering to keep the faith and get through the hard days is helpful and inspirational!

As the days move on, you grow more and more restless. You pick up your favorite book, one you could read over and over again without tiring of it, and dive right in. What book are you reading?

Literally happening all through ‘real’ quarantine: A Court of Mist and Fury. I’ve read it at least twice a month since April and have yet to tire of it. This book has truly gotten be through quarantine and I will forever be thankful to SJM for writing such a fabulous book.

After months of being home (staying safe of course!) your town is loosening up on restrictions. You finally get to see your significant other (or best friend!) and go to your favorite place! Who are you going with and where are you going?

My SO would 100% be Rhysand from ACOTAR and we would probably go to the fabulous little restaurant in Velaris that he takes Feyre to (that is if we can eat on the patio). If outdoor seating isn’t available, I think just walking around the Rainbow of Velaris would be therapeutic and a breath of fresh air. I mean…with Rhysand as my boyfriend, I think I’d be more distracted by him anyway, so we could go to the dump for all I care.

If Corona Virus were a person that could be defeated, what character would you call upon to stop it and save the world?

I’d call Pippa from A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. She’d be able to track down the location, discover it’s weakness, and figure out the best way to kill it. I have full faith in Pippa! Brains >> Brawn (or something like that right?).

So, those are my answers! My brain instantly thinks of Sarah J Maas books so it was hard to get around them! I can’t wait to see/read what yours answers are!
