Riding the Struggle Bus – Life Update!

Hi all! I know I’ve been slacking with reviews…but that’s because I’ve been slacking with reading! I thought that once the wedding was done that I’d be ready to read again, but I’ve found that I’m in a new slump. October was a great reading month, even with the wedding! We’re now 16 days into November and I’ve read one book and am working on a second. I just don’t have time or energy. Being a teacher in a virtual setting is exhausting. Once work is done for the day (3PM) I’ve been taking 2 hour naps and then I don’t want to do anything once I wake up. I try to read, but my eyes are just so tired from staring at a computer all day. I know, I know, I’m throwing myself a pity party….we’re allowed to do that once in a while!

While I may not be reading a lot, I have taken up a new crafting hobby. I’m hoping to add my new things to my Etsy shop in the new year! I’ve been working with resin and molds and designing some pretty cool things! My craft room (which is also my library) looks like a bomb went off in it! I’ve spent entirely too much money on resin supplies, but I needed some other outlet to focus on since reading isn’t working. I’m going to make a butt ton (that’s an accurate measurement right?) of Christmas gifts to nonchalantly use people as guinea pigs for my projects! Below are just a small fraction of the things I can make! I really love working with resin because the customization options are endless!

Some cute self-defense keychains!

Round and square coasters!

Trinket Trays

Some Misc things! I am in love with the cat ear ring (next the the green tree).

As I said, these are just a few things I can make! I’m waiting on a lot of molds to come in the mail, but will be making guitar pics, pendants, animals, ornaments, and whatever else I can get my hands on!

What have you been doing with your time? I’m hoping that once my Grad school semester is over I’ll be a little less stressed out. My goal is to read at least two more books by the end of the month…I think I can do it (especially with Thanksgiving break coming!).

Thanks for hanging in there with me as I ride the struggle bus to the end of 2020! Hopefully I’ll be more active soon!

Smutty Goodness!

I’ll be honest, I quite enjoy a good smut every now and again (okay, maybe all the time). However, I’m very picky when it comes to reading smut. So, I’m going to go through how I’m going to start rating the deliciously smutty books that I read, because I can’t hold them to the same standards as my normal reads! Scroll to the bottom if you just want to see some recommendations!

My Raunchy Ratings

Plot

*gasp* Who reads smut for a plot? I do! It’s strange, I know, but I can’t read a book if I’m not invested in what’s going on, no matter what the book is about. I don’t need an in depth plot, but I need to at least be able to have a story to follow (or else I’ll lose interest). It can be simple and include typical tropes found in these books, as well as plot twists and new ideas which are always welcome. I enjoy the plot of “Lingus” by Mariana Zapata because it’s something I had never read before and it lends itself to a great, steamy, comedic story.

Characters

I need the main couple to be like-able. I enjoy a bad boy and strong female character. A lot of times the female is symbolic of someone who needs to let go and find a partner to show her who she is…I don’t need that but I’ll deal. If the chemistry is good, the smut will be good (that is, if it’s well written). “Wallbanger” by Alice Clayton has some bangin’ (hehe) characters. I love them and was invested in their stories from the start!

Smut Level

Obviously, if I’m reading smut, I expect there to be a fair amount of sexy times! I find myself disappointed a lot of the times because I’m really into the book and there’s one or two sex scenes in the whole thing. I don’t need back to back pages of sex, (though, I wouldn’t object) but I don’t want to feel like I’ve wasted my time reading a smutty book because of, well, lack of smut! The book, literally titled “Smut” by Karina Halle is probably my favorite in terms of sex. The scenes are pretty detailed and there’s an abundance (hence the title). I love this book so much and highly recommend it!

Writing

In terms of writing, I’m not too picky when it comes to this genre. The only part of the writing I’m really critical about is the sex scenes. There are certain words that just make me cringe during these scenes. One off the top of my head: feasting *gag*. I can’t ever imagine writing sex scenes, so credit to everyone that does, but I think if you wouldn’t use a word to describe a person’s anatomy or acts to someone, it probably shouldn’t be used in a book. To each their own I suppose!

So, these are the four categories I’ll use to rate my smut reads here on out. It’s way less intricate than what I use for other books, but I feel like smut is its own world, and deserves a different set of “skills”.

My Favorite Smut Filled Books

Thanks for following along! I’d love to hear what your favorite smutty reads are!

Black Lives Matter

I’d say America is in shambles, but because of the prominent racism and injustice that has been happening for centuries, America has never been together. I’m saddened by the way the black community is constantly treated by people in power and by America in general. We’re supposedly the land of the free yet black people are getting murdered for living their daily lives. As a teacher in a school that is mostly black, I’ve had students, when events like the ones happening now have occurred in the past, tell me they’re scared they’re going to leave their house one day and not return, all because of their skin color. The one thing about themselves that they had no choice over. There is NO excuse for what is happening in this country. For people to be murdered because of the color of their skin is sickening. We have to come together and use our voices; use our voices to show love and support for those whose voices are constantly silenced.

We can show support in many ways like protesting and speaking up, donating to the causes, supporting local black owned businesses, signing petitions, and supporting black authors and artists. Being a book blogger, I’m going to start by sharing some books by black authors that you should explore and think about reading! I’m also going to include links to different petitions and fundraisers in case you are moved to help in those ways. Look at the non-fiction book options to educate yourself, even if it means just getting some idea of what the black community is experiencing. Whether you add them to your TBR or purchase them, any support counts!

Meet Allison Cursebreaker

Hello all! My name is Allison and I’m the face behind the screen for this book blog! I thought I should introduce myself so you can piece together a personality with the posts I make!

I’m 26 years old and teach Middle School (yes I know, I’m a saint!).

I love traveling to zoos and taking pictures of animals. I’m an animal love by nature and cry when any animal does something remotely cute. Here’s a few of my favorite photos that I’ve taken:

A mandrill captured at the Columbus zoo.
A young lion at the Virginia Zoo.

My absolute favorite animal, the red panda! This one lives at the Virginia Zoo!

I’m a Disney lover and could spend days there, if the walking didn’t kill my feet so much! I don’t care how old I am, I will happily wait in line to meet a princess (or any other character)! I can’t wait to have children so I can share the Disney magic with them…hopefully I can afford to take them!

From my last trip; September of 2019!

I’m engaged to someone pretty cool. He’s a music teacher for elementary aged children and is the most talented person I know. We’ve been together for 7 years and our plan is to get married this October if the Rona doesn’t ruin that…We grew up across the street from each other and have known one another for 23 years! I’m blessed that he loves zoos and Disney as much as I do and is just as much of a kid as myself!
